  • Discipleship

Raising our children and educating them could be described as, "a long obedience in the same direction." The longer we homeschool, the more we believe that to be obedient, to stay on the "narrow pathway" that Jesus described, we need the Lord desperately, and we also need each other.

Resolutions

These were specific goals he desired to remember and live by relating to his life mission, time management, relationships, character, and his spiritual life.  Then, he proceeded to read his resolutions weekly in order to refresh his memory and "keep his mind on his duty before God."

After reading through his resolutions, one in particular seemed to stick with me.  Oftentimes, it comes to the forefront of my mind.

Resolved:  Whenever my feelings begin to appear in the least out of order, when I am conscious of the least uneasiness within, or the least irregularity without, I will then subject myself to the strictest examination. ~Jonathan Edwards – 1723

How often are my feelings out of order? Do I feel uneasy within? Can I sense an irregularity from without? On a daily basis the situations, circumstances, and responsibilities in my life have the potential to unsettle my heart and mind.  Also, unfortunately, my sinful heart tends towards being out of order all too often.

According to the wise counsel of Jonathan Edwards, as soon as I detect that my feelings are in any way out of order – no matter what the reason, I need to "subject myself to the strictest examination."   This sounds so clinical, and, to be honest, not at all enjoyable!  When my feelings are "out of order," it can be a real challenge to examine myself and hold my thoughts and feelings up to the light of God's Word.

Oh, but there is HOPE! When I am in need of a strict examination of my heart, I am not alone. In Psalm 51, David cries out to the Lord asking Him to, Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.

What a simple yet powerful prayer! The very God who created THE UNIVERSE can work and create in our hearts as well. We have the same powerful, creative force that spoke the world into existence at our disposal to aid us in putting our hearts in order.

Lord, help me to be aware of when my feelings are out of order - out of step with your ways. Help me to make David's prayer my own. Please create in me a clean heart, O God and renew a right spirit within me. Thank you for your willingness to bring your awesome power to bear on my heart and life.
