  • Discipleship

Raising our children and educating them could be described as, "a long obedience in the same direction." The longer we homeschool, the more we believe that to be obedient, to stay on the "narrow pathway" that Jesus described, we need the Lord desperately, and we also need each other.

Self-Control: The Key to Health, Wealth, and Success?

I love it when secular research confirms a Godly principle. While we have been doing this blog series on the fruit of the Spirit, an article called

The Key to Heatlh, Wealth, and Success: Self-Control caught my attention. Some snippets from the article:

Self-control may be the secret to success, according to a persuasive new study that followed 1,000 children from birth to age 32: children who showed early signs of self-mastery were not only less likely to have developed addictions or committed a crime by adulthood, but were also healthier and wealthier than their more impulsive peers.

"This is a great study, mining a huge trove of data to tease apart the relationships among some really important factors that can determine the direction of our lives," says Martha Farah, director of the Center for Neuroscience and Society at the University of Pennsylvania. "It highlights how incredibly important self-control is."

The new research confirms the findings of the famous Stanford marshmallow study, which found that young children who were able resist grabbing a fluffy marshmallow placed in front of them — for 15 long minutes — in order to get two of them later scored an average of 210 points higher on the SAT than kids who couldn't wait. About one-third of the 4-to-6-year-olds studied were able to withstand the sweet temptation. As in the current research, the kids with more self-control in the marshmallow trial had better life outcomes across the board.

Take a minute to watch the cuteness in this video.  It will make you smile!

How cute is that! It's interesting to think of what each of my children might have done in that situation.  What would I have done? (It is really interesting to think of what I would have done if it was something chocolate !)

Here's the part of the article that encourages me as a homeschool mom:

Interventions aimed at improving self-control and behavior throughout childhood are now being studied, but so far, research has not identified a single best approach. The most effective programs are small and tightly focused on increasing self-control itself.

What program is smaller and more tightly focused than a loving mom daily helping and guiding their child to develop self-control as they go about their homeschooling day? I'm not interested in my child becoming wealthy for the sake of wealth; however, I am extremely interested in my children fulfilling the calling the Lord has on their lives and leading healthy, fulfilling lives. It's no surprise to me that possessing a fruit of the Spirit of the Lord would get them closer to that goal!

Homeschooling mom, keep fighting the good fight every day of developing good fruit in your sweet ones. It is worth the effort!
